Aventine Press announces the release of Paloma (ISBN 1-59330-313-0), a novel.
At La Guardia, Paloma Dove is running from an assassin in a straw hat. Desperate to board a plane to safety, her escape is aborted when her name is paged. Certain the killer has found her, her fear slams back into overdrive. For a moment Paloma considers surrender, but the thought of her daughter, Maddie, keeps her hope and desire to live paramount. Resourceful, Paloma reverts to a con and secures safe exit. Matters, however, quicky complicate when, Max Laurent, a man she had loved but learned to hate, is also in pursuit. Without money or identification, Paloma must stay ahead of them all until she can find refuge.
Max Laurent, retired FBI agent and Paloma's old flame, learns she is in danger and sets out on a wayward course to find her. A cat and mouse game ensues. Paloma must outwit the assassin. Max must outwit Paloma. Soon both Max and Paloma return to Buffalo where their paths cross. Joining forces, yet estranged from past emotional bruises, the two gather clues and ask the critical question - which of Paloma's three identities is the assassin after? Before coming to terms with past misunderstandings and a child long ago abandoned, they must find and eliminate the killer.
In Paloma, Ms. Lavid tells a terrific story that seamlessly melds both suspense and romance. Much like The Fugitive, with the backdrop of a chase and a looming homicidal maniac, the main characters must address past mistakes, regrets and redefined their lives to each other, as well as to themselves. "Paloma" is a contemporary, urban story with a Latina protagonist that delivers.
Ms. Lavid also wrote Rented Rooms, a collection of short fiction, acclaimed by Tregolwyn Book Reviews as Sixteen stories...uniformly excellent. Lavid's treatment of sensitive subjects as well as lighter tales demonstrates her range. Rented Rooms is used in entry level college writing courses.
